Kissamos wine

The wine which is produced in this area in a traditional way, is unique. Since the Byzantine and Roman times it is said that the emperors used to send specially formed ships to carry wine and oil to their palaces.

There is also very important evidence that the wine of Kissamos is also mentioned in Dioscurides books written in 100 AD.

The marine research has actually brought out all these shipwrecks which were full of ceramic vases put on specially designed wooden platforms suitable for transport through the sea.

Even today the wine is produced with the traditional way which means stepping and pressing the grapes with feet.
